It was a perfect summer day – sunny, breezy and just the right temperature for cycling outside! Before you pull your bike out of the garage and hit the open road, let’s talk about bike safety.
While cycling is a fun and safe way to stay active, there are a few items to check out and some rules to follow before hitting the road this season. It’s a safer and more fun environment for everyone if we all obey the traffic rules!
ensure fit
Proper bike size is critical to safe riding. You want to make sure the bike you’re riding isn’t too big or too small for you. If you can’t balance the bike on your toes while sitting on the seat, it’s probably too big for you. You want the handlebars to be about the same height as the seat. As you extend your leg while pedaling, your knee should remain slightly bent. Check your bike fitting with your local bike shop to make sure you have it securely fitted.
Perform a quick security check
Every time you take your bike out, check for any problems with the brakes, tires, chain, and handlebars. Also make sure you have reflectors on the front and rear bike rims.
don’t forget your helmet
Wearing a bike helmet can save your life, so wear it every time you ride. When adjusting the helmet, make sure the helmet is positioned under the forehead, about an inch above the eyebrows, with the chin strap securely fastened. A tug at the end makes sure it doesn’t get loose and wobble.
follow traffic rules
Remember, if you ride on the road, you need to follow all the same rules as your vehicle. Use hand signals so motorists know your intentions, follow your vehicle, and obey all traffic signals. When riding in a group, remember to line up.
Dress in style and be safe
If you must ride on the road, wear bright colors so you can be easily seen. Avoid using headphones and cell phones while cycling; your full attention should be on the road ahead. Also be aware of potholes, people, animals and any obstacles that might be dangerous.
Go out this summer and see all the Trials in Pittsburgh. For example, you and your family can now bike along the trail from Pittsburgh to the Allegheny Passage in Washington, DC! If you don’t have your own bike, look for local bike exchanges and opportunities to rent bikes.
