Tatcha isn’t like many other big beauty brands, though. Tatcha was not built entirely around the needs of consumers, but was born out of founder Vicky Tsai’s concern for the individual’s skin tone.
“At the start of my career, I worked in the corporate world, which required me to travel the world and exposed me to beauty in many forms,” she tells Byrdie. “While I’m grateful for the experiences I’ve gained in my career, the constant stress and travel wreaks havoc on my skin and state of mind.”
As a result, Cai developed a painful acute case dermatitis, despite everything she tried, it lasted for years. “The doctor prescribed strong antibiotics, which I took for a long time without success, and my skin became so sensitive that the only product I could use was Aquaphor,” she said.
Eventually, Cai quit her job to find more meaning and balance in her life — and a way to heal her skin. One thing leads to another and she finds herself in Japan. “In Kyoto, I learned about timeless ingredients and rituals that would give me a lot of meaning. This inspired [the idea for] Tatcha, I created it to share with the world the Japanese beauty philosophy that has had a big impact on my life,” she said.
As much as Tatcha products are beloved, $68 for a moisturizer may seem like overkill for many. But when it comes to moisturizing, soothing, and amazing results, we strongly believe these products are well worth the investment. (Also, many bestsellers are available as mini car for travel, which is a great option if you want to try out a product without committing to the full-size price. )
